Sandfly Alert

Hope you all enjoyed the Ubin Adventure Camp. Have you discovered any insect bites that do not heal till today? They are most probably caused by sandflies that live in the sand near the lagoon area.

You can easily differentiate between mosquito and sandfly bites - the former tend to be a big red lump and will not develop into ulcers and rashes, whilte the latter appears to be small red patches that itch like crazy and have the tendency to develop into ulcers and rashes.

Here are the steps to help you kill the itch and stop the rash as you accelerate the healing process.

Taken from http://www.travel-philippines.com/general-info/important-health-issues.htm

  • Clean the bite area, apply antibacterial ointment using a cotton bud or with a clean hand.

  • Cover with a patch of open weave hauze and tape into place.

  • Repeat Step 1 and 2 twice a day or more until the wounds are no longer infected and starting to heal (remeber to repeat treatment after bathing)
***This can take one week to 10+ days, depending on the severity of the bite.

  • If you can do this correctly, the sandfly bites will not develop beyond the normalmosquito bite sizes and will heal relatively quickly.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not scartch the wound! This will cause bacteria infection, leading to leishmania. You can see how leishmania looks like by clicking here, but please be reminded that the pictures might be somewhat disturbing.

Wishing everyone with sandfly bites a speedy recovery!

P.S. I've set up a Photobucket.com account for the class! You can upload all the photos you want to post in the class blog in that account. Account name and password same as your blogger login. =) Cheers~!
